The edition of the Greek alchemical corpus is a joint venture between the International Academy of the History of Science (IAHS) and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres (AIBL). This venture, which was already warmly encouraged by A.J. Festugière in his 1968 report to the Union Académique Internationale (UAI), was set up in 1968 under the direction of H.D. Saffrey (1921-2021). The project is actually headed by Jacques Jouanna (AIBL) and the joint director Matteo Martelli (IAHS). It aims at publishing in the "Collection des Université des France (CUF)" series what remains of the Greek alchemical corpus, without neglecting the contribution of the Syriac and Arabic traditions to the transmission of Graeco-Egyptian and Byzantine alchemical sources. The project will continue the pioneering work of Marcelin Berthelot (1827-1907), who, in 1887-1888, published the "Collection des Alchimistes Grecs" with the collaboration of Charles-Émile Ruelle.
